“We have been preparing thoroughbreds for many years.”
Robert Price – Having made his start in the racing world, riding track work in the early 1980’s under the tutelage of the legendary K.J. Robinson, he then had his first success as a trainer, in 1992, with a tried racehorse called “Phantom King”. From there he has gone from strength to strength winning numerous Metropolitan and stakes races up to the present day.
Luke Price started his racing career as a jockey. He was one of Sydney’s leading apprentices– riding in excess of 110 winners! The riding career was cut short with a horror race fall and an increase in riding weight being a taller kid. From there Luke moved into training in his own right with a string of 3 horses at his father’s stables in Nowra in 2012.
With just three horses Luke managed to have a Group 1 Derby runner in his first season with “Man of Choice” At that time in a sport dominated by weight of numbers, the odds of him snaring a Derby horse were astronomical but it was testament to his ability as a young trainer!
“With success comes expansion and we have now expanded!!!”
Luke was stable foreman at Turpentine Park but he is now co-trainer with his father Rob. Luke and Rob personally ride the track work on the property and at the racetrack jump outs. It is this hands-on approach to training which gives the Price family their distinct edge in preparing thoroughbreds to race.
Now they have expanded their training operations to include on track stables at Kembla Grange to accommodate their ever increasing client base and keeping them competitive to all aspects of in the industry. Country, Provincial and City class racing is all now within easy reach of their Kembla and Nowra bases.
“We are an approachable and communicative combination, and we pride ourselves on great client relationships and personal integrity”
We are always available to discuss horse purchases with clients and readily make ourselves available to inspect yearlings at all the major sales for anyone interested in getting involved.
In 1995 I was able to purchase a bay filly by a relatively unknown sire for $4,750 at the Scone yearling sales. That filly went on to race as “Red Ivory” – a multiple black type earner and matriarch of the Turpentine Park broodmare band with her foals “One Way Ticket” and “Ivory Pegasus” going on to continue in the family tradition with wins at Randwick. In recent years we have bought quality and not quantity. Jamaea, Count de rupee and Verbek are three recent purchases that show what can be achieved.
“We have the skill set to manage a horses career at a superior level”
We have keen eyes for purchasing inexpensive racehorses that go on to perform at the highest level and have had considerable success with numerous city performers purchased with relatively small capital. As genuine horsemen we are capable of purchasing “champagne horses” on a “beer budget”.
Patricia Price (Rob’s wife and Luke’s mother), is the daughter of the legendary south coast trainer K.J.Robinson – KJ was second to none in the industry!
“It is this wealth of background, combined with a genuine love and respect for the land and the horse that makes our combination a force to be reckoned with in the racing industry.”
Whether it is having a horse trained, putting together the perfect package of owners for a syndicate, or purchasing from a yearling sale – Rob and Luke Price Racing is the ideal choice. With the opportunity of training in an idyllic setting – literally racehorse heaven in the country – and having the best of both worlds with the provincial based “on track” stables at Kembla – the combination and ability to prepare city winners at a fraction of the costs of city trainers, is too good to resist!
